WHISPERS FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Uncertainties Of Life

Why do you seek
certainty from me?
Why do you need
to know what the future
will bring, what is going
to happen and when?
Why do you need my
assurance that all will
be well.? Why do you need
the control and the comfort
you get from knowing
what I know. The certainties
of your life belong to me.
If you knew what I knew
why would you need faith?

Dr. Don’s Reflection

In this whisper, the questions speak fiercely. I am not sure when this whisper came to me, but it must have been at a time when I needed and wanted some certainty in my life. But as I read this whisper which I wrote down, it became clear to me that not knowing what is going to happen in my life produces faith.

If I knew what God knows about my life why would I need faith?  So by being seized with all these questions in this whisper, it forced me to fully realize the greatness of a faithful life.

The Lord knows the fears that uncertainty causes me, as well as, the stress and strains that are produced from it.  Look how many times in the Bible, Jesus said, “fear not” or “worry not.” He knew people feared and worried about the uncertainty of their life.

Jesus came to earth and rose from the dead to do away with fear and worry. You would think that after knowing that he rose from the dead, that he beat death, I would do precisely as he said. “fear not” I mean he rose from the dead so why should I worry about my finances, family, health and the state of the world. No, I have learned to throw it to the foot of the cross.

Why would I need Jesus if I knew what he knew? I wouldn’t, but because I do not know even the next minute of my future, I draw close to him realizing how helpless and hopeless I would be without him. In not knowing the future I need his grace and direction for without it I would flounder in my life and the very essence of my being.

It is in being dependent on Jesus that our love grows for each other. It is not me just needing him, but he needs me, as well. Why; because the creator always wants to love and be near his creation.

It was and is not easy for me to be so dependent on anyone even God. I had to learn through all my falls, all my attempts to take control of my life that it was when I was in control and will of God that I would “fear not

Dr. Don Comments

We all would like to know what tomorrow will bring. We would love to gain control of the certainties of our future. But that is not how it works. Who knows what the next minute will bring let alone the day month or year.

Many people cannot stand the uncertainties of life. They want to know what’s going to happen tomorrow. Where will they be next year? And how will this or that workout? These are all answers that do not belong to us. Don’t get me wrong many people try to take control of the uncertainties in their lives and in doing so they make a mess of their lives with obsessive and compulsive behaviors to their detriment and those people around them, particularly their loved ones.

Many more people can’t stand the fact that they do not know what the future will bring so they live their lives in fear always worried about their uncertain future. These people seek refuge in addictions, most are depressed and ridden will all sorts of psychological disorders.  Without the assurance that their future will be OK people cannot trust anything or anyone, let alone themselves.

Are you worried about the future?  Do you fear things will not go your way? Does your inability to control your future disrupt your life and prevent you from being who you need to be?  Are you a Christian?  Do you believe in Christ?  Believing in Christ is to trust him.  Yes, it is a process, and sometimes we need to go through a lot in our lives to get to that point of trust in Christ. But once you do, you worry not about the future because you know Father God took care of Christ and he will take care of you. God is not only a protector but he is a provider, and all our needs can be met by loving and following Christ through the Holy Spirit into the grace of God. In your walk with Christ, you can develop a trust that will give you the confidence to live life fully?

Well, stop right now and think of all the trust in your life you have given to other people and things for the assurance of a good future. Think about it?  Has it worked? Has putting trust in what people or the world has to offer brought you closer to the peace you seek?  If you believe in God, then that belief must be founded in trust.

Getting that trust is a process and for some more of a process than for others. But no matter how long, how difficult you make that process of trusting God. You got to get there. The French writer Simone Wiel wrote about this spiritual quest, “only certainty will do, any less than certainty is unworthy of God.”

God is worthy of your trust, and he wants you to trust him, not for his good, but for yours. He knows that your full trust in him will give you the peace and happiness you want so deeply in your life.
